In a Directed Denial of Service (DDOS) attack, attackers overwhelm websites and servers by bombardment with “traffic.” They use a network of compromised computers known as “zombies” to do so. The owners of these compromised computers have no idea that their equipment is moonlighting as a zombie minion.

It is estimated that roughly 25% of the world’s computers—150 million[1. Tim Weber, Criminals "May Overwhelm the Web," BBC News (January 25, 2007)]—have been recruited into an enormous transnational network of slave computers, a global zombie army is on the rise.
